“Cannabis is inherently polypharmaceutical, and synergy arises from interactions between its multiple components.”
Spectrum CBD Botanicals Story
In the early spring of 2017, a gentleman walked into the office of our Plum Daisy commercial kitchen in Palisade, Colorado, where we had been manufacturing our line of certified organic jams for nearly two decades. He introduced himself and asked us to consider infusing CBD (cannabidiol) into our jams. Serendipitously, we had already been thinking about this intriguing possibility. That impromptu meeting was the beginning of a wonderful journey.
In making our jams, the key has always been to use quality ingredients to create quality products. Likewise, in developing CBD products, we wanted to use the highest quality CBD available anywhere. We decided to ensure quality for our customers literally from the ground up. So that we could control the ways in which the plants are grown and harvested and the oil is extracted and refined, we became hemp farmers and CBD extractors and refiners.
We saw growing hemp as an amazing opportunity to become involved in a new venture that would be an extension of what we were already doing. Our mom and pop jam business began in 1998 with the purchase of apricot, peach, and plum orchards that had been farmed for more than a century in ways that depleted the soil. Dedicated to the principles and practice of organic farming, we added organic material to the soil that it had lacked for so long and implemented other sustainable measures. Over time, giving back to the land more than we took from it, we were able to transform the orchards. The trees responded to our caretaking and produced fruit with so much flavor that we needed to use minimal sugar in our jams.
Within five years of making our first jars of jams, they were winning international awards at the annual Specialty Food Show in New York City. Our jam line —“Colorado Mountain Jam”— has been a six-time Silver finalist at this show, and two of our jams have won Gold awards as the “Outstanding USDA Certified Organic Product”. Today we do private label production for leading brands in America as well as production for many Colorado fruit growers.
And so, Spectrum CBD Botanicals was founded as a natural outgrowth of our commitment to farming sustainably and to making quality products. In 2017, we planted our first small hemp crop on just one acre of land where we had previously grown apricots, and we learned a lot about growing a plant that was new to us, but one that likes hot days and cool nights just as our fruit trees did. We took another huge step that fall by purchasing a CO2 extractor and transforming the building where we had warehoused jam into an extraction facility and refining laboratory. We enlisted industry experts to assist us in developing the very best methods that result in the highest quality CBD. In 2018, we expanded our hemp grow, built a greenhouse, and entered into a partnership with Western Sierra Resource Corporation — individuals who share our values and who are committed to the principle that we must “give more than we take”.
We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to our dedicated, hardworking staff. Allen, Chey, Jim, Karan, Michelle, Mike, Payton, Ricky, and Shenna. Our team members are equally at home in our extraction facility and refining laboratory as they are out in the field. They believe in what we are doing as strongly as we do.
Every step along the way, we learn more and more about this amazing plant called cannabis and its extraordinary health benefits. Judith — the “mom” in our family run business — has been passionate about natural healing modalities for decades. A nonprofit magazine where she once was assistant editor featured articles on nutrition, and she was fortunate to interview and write about the work of such pioneers as Dr. Jean Mayer and Adelle Davis. Ever since, she has been convinced that the phytonutrients, which nature provides so abundantly, are our best medicine.
The most exciting, rewarding, and fascinating part of our journey has been formulating and developing our CBD products with the needs of you, our customer, in mind. We researched many botanical ingredients and essential oils for potential inclusion in our topical products before working with a Ph.D. biochemist to help us narrow the field to what we believe are the most beneficial.
We welcome your feedback, whether it be positive or negative. In our efforts to bring you the best of all that CBD and other botanicals have to offer, we promise we will continue our research and continue refining our existing products and developing new ones. We feel so grateful to be sharing this journey with you.
